Indulge in the delightful experience of homemade naanโthe soft, fluffy, and flavorful flatbread that complements any meal. This Middle Eastern-inspired recipe tops the naan with sesame seeds for an added crunch and rich nutty flavor. Perfect for wrapping around your favorite fillings or serving alongside curries!
Ingredients
๐พ 500g all-purpose flour
๐ 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
๐ซ 2 tablespoons olive oil
๐ฌ 1 tablespoon sugar
๐ง 1 teaspoon salt
๐ง 250ml warm water
๐ฅ 1 egg
๐ฅ 3 tablespoons plain yogurt
๐ฟ Sesame seeds, for topping
Instructions
1- Prepare the Dough:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, active dry yeast, olive oil, sugar, salt, and warm water.
- Use a stand mixer with a dough hook attachment to mix the ingredients on low speed until a smooth dough forms. This should take about 5-7 minutes. The dough should be elastic and slightly tacky.
2- First Rise:
- Shape the dough into a ball and place it back in the mixing bowl.
- Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and a clean kitchen towel. Allow the dough to rise in a warm place for about 1-1.5 hours, or until it doubles in size.
3- Shape the Dough:
- Once the dough has risen, punch it down gently to release any air.
- Divide it into equal portions, roughly the size of a tennis ball, and shape them into rounds.
4- Prepare for Baking:
- Preheat your oven to 220ยฐC (428ยฐF) to ensure itโs hot enough when the naan is ready for baking.
- Place the dough balls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and plain yogurt. Spoon the mixture over each dough ball.
- Flatten each ball slightly with your fingertips to form a flatbread shape and create indentations, aiding in even baking and surface color.
5- Add Toppings & Bake:
- Sprinkle sesame seeds evenly over each piece of flattened dough.
- Bake for approximately 10-15 minutes, or until the naans are golden brown with a crispy crust.
6- Serve:
- Allow the naans to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy them warm as a side to your favorite dishes.
