Ingredients
For the Pastry Cream:
π₯ 2 cups of whole milk
π 1/2 cup of sugar
π₯ 4 egg yolks
π½ 1/4 cup of cornstarch
π¦ 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract
π§ 1 tablespoon of unsalted butter
For the Trifle:
βοΈ 2 tablespoons of instant coffee
πͺ Ladyfingers (as needed to fit your serving cups)
π« Cocoa powder (for dusting)
π¦ Whipped cream (optional, for topping)
Instructions
1- Prepare the Pastry Cream:
- Pour 2 cups of milk and half of the sugar into a saucepan. Heat over medium until it begins to simmer.
- In a mixing bowl, combine egg yolks, the remaining sugar, and cornstarch. Mix until well combined.
- Gradually pour half of the simmered milk into the egg mixture, whisking continuously to temper the eggs.
- Transfer the egg mixture back into the saucepan with the remaining milk. Cook over medium heat, continuing to stir, until it thickens.
- Once thickened, remove from heat. Add butter and vanilla extract, mixing until the butter is fully melted.
- Transfer to a bowl, cover with plastic wrap directly on the surface to prevent a skin from forming, and refrigerate until cooled.
2- Assemble the Trifle:
- Dissolve 1.5 tablespoons of instant coffee in warm water.
- Cut ladyfingers in half, and quickly dip them into the coffee solution. Arrange a layer into your serving dish or individual cups.
- Fill a piping bag with the chilled pastry cream. Pipe a layer over the ladyfingers.
- Repeat the layers until your cups are filled.
- If desired, top with a layer of whipped cream.
- Sprinkle cocoa powder on top as a final touch.
3- Serving:
- Chill the assembled trifle for at least 1 hour before serving to allow the flavors to meld.
