Craving the tantalizing flavors of an In-N-Out burger but stuck on the East Coast? Fear not! The Onion-Wrapped Flying Dutchman is the scrumptious, bun-less wonder you've seen all over social media. Delight in the combination of juicy beef patties, melted cheese, and sweetly caramelized onions. This messy burger is deliciously worth the effort!

Ingredients

🧅 1 large onion
🥩 1 pound ground beef
🧂 Salt to taste
🌶️ Black pepper to taste
🟡 1/2 teaspoon yellow mustard for each burger
🧀 6 slices American cheese
🫒 1 tablespoon oil for the onions

—Sauce Ingredients—
🥄 1/2 cup mayonnaise
🍅 3 tablespoons ketchup
🟡 2 tablespoons mustard
🥒 2 tablespoons sweet relish
🍶 1 tablespoon white vinegar
🧂 1/4 teaspoon salt or to taste

Instructions

1- Prepare the Sauce:

  • In a small bowl, combine the mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, sweet relish, white vinegar, and salt.
  • Whisk them together until smooth and well combined. Set aside.

2- Prepare the Onions:

  • Cut the onion into thick circular slices, about 1/2 inch thick.
  • Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add the oil.
  • Place the onion slices in the skillet and cook for about 2-3 minutes on each side, until they are golden and caramelized.
  • Before removing them from the skillet, place one slice of cheese on half of the grilled onions to let it melt slightly.

3- Cook the Burgers:

  • Divide the ground beef into 4-6 equal portions and form into balls.
  • In the same skillet, place 2 balls at a time and smash them down into thin patties.
  • Season with salt, black pepper, and spread about 1/2 teaspoon of mustard on each patty.
  • Cook the patties for about 2 minutes until golden brown, then flip.
  • Place a slice of cheese on each patty. Once the cheese melts, stack the burgers to create double patties, and continue with the rest.

4- Assemble the Burgers:

  • Place the beef patty stack on top of a cheese-topped grilled onion, then cap it with another grilled onion slice.
  • Serve immediately with the sauce on the side or drizzled over the burger.
