Experience a delightful twist on a classic pastry with our Cinnamon Apple Warbats. Made with luscious apple filling and wrapped in delicate phyllo dough, this recipe combines sweet and spicy flavors with the satisfying crunch of walnuts and a drizzle of simple syrup.

Ingredients

📜 1 package of phyllo dough
🧈 2 sticks of butter, melted

For the Filling:
🍏 6 apples, shredded
🧈 2 tablespoons of butter
🥄 1/4 cup of granulated sugar
🥄 1/3 cup of brown sugar
🥄 1 tablespoon of cinnamon
🌰 1/2 teaspoon of nutmeg
🌰 1 cup of walnuts, chopped
🥄 1 tablespoon of corn starch
🍋 Juice of half a small lemon

For the Simple Syrup:
🥄 1 cup of sugar
💧 1 cup of water
🍋 1/3 teaspoon lemon juice

Instructions

1- Prepare the Simple Syrup:

  • In a saucepan, combine 1 cup of sugar, 1 cup of water, and 1/3 teaspoon lemon juice.
  • Bring to a boil and let simmer for 10 to 15 minutes.
  • Remove from heat and let it cool completely.

2- Make the Apple Filling:

  • In a pot, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat.
  • Add shredded apples, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and corn starch. Mix well.
  • Cook the mixture for about 3 to 4 minutes until everything is well combined and the flavors are integrated.
  • Remove from heat and mix in the chopped walnuts. Let the mixture cool completely.

3- Assemble the Warbats:

  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  • Keep phyllo dough covered with a damp towel to prevent it from drying out.
  • On a flat surface, lay out one sheet of phyllo dough. Fold it into thirds lengthwise.
  • Place a small amount of apple filling at one end of the strip and start folding into a triangle, similar to folding a paper football.
  • Continue folding the strip in a triangular motion until you reach the end. If necessary, trim excess dough.
  • Place each warbat on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

4- Bake the Warbats:

  • Pour melted butter over the prepared warbats.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for approximately 30 minutes or until they are golden brown.

5- Finishing Touches:

  • Once baked, let the warbats cool for about 5 minutes.
  • Drizzle them with simple syrup using only about 1/2 cup to avoid excessive sweetness.
  • For an additional layer of flavor, melt 1 cup of caramel bites with 1 tablespoon of water in the microwave for 1 to 1.5 minutes. Stir and drizzle over the warbats.
